hi 1st of all depends what the grounds like underneath now,if the sub base is solid then 100mm minimum of type 1 /crush and run should be used with a taram membrane which allows water through but stops it coming back through,as for grit sand usually 40mm is the prefered depth,i have 30mm screed bars so i use 30mm the less the better

May 07, 2003The best way to do it (IMHO) is have the road base spread at least 4 thick and compacted. Then have 1 1/4 minus crushed rock applied over it. You can also have the 1 1/4 dumped without the road base, but it will take some time for the gravel to settle before you have a good driveable surface. But then again, I've never seen this wash-out.
